Design proposals for ‘the Victorias’ entail redesigning the highways and public spaces comprising Victoria Roundabout, Queensway, London Road and Victoria Circus (Click here for details on the Public Realm Strategy) with an emphasis upon improving linkages between Victoria Avenue and Victoria Station, and the High Street through to the seafront.
These proposals are supported by SSBC’s application to and award by HM Communities and Local Government for project funding for the implementation of the initial phases of the Project.
The Project aims are:-
- to redesign the configuration of this considerable space to create an attractive and viable space for public transport, private vehicles, and one providing equal if not greater priority for pedestrians and cyclists
- to create an improved sense of place and town centre arrival
- to reappraise the demands of vehicle movements through the project area in relation to access to other roads and SSBC’s transport policies
- to improve pedestrian access and crossing points to the High Street, London Road, Farringdon and the town centre and seafront
- to provide transport priority for public transport and SERT proposals
- to enhance the presence of Victoria Station
Completion of the first phase of the design process is programmed for September 2008.
