Our emerging strategy for the town centre aims to promote sustainable travel patterns in line with objectives set out in the Council’s Local Transport Plan 2 (LTP2). The main elements of this are:
- Making sustainable modes of movement more attractive
- Encouraging mixed use developments
- Encouraging car reduced developments
- Introducing travel plans for residential and commercial developments
- Securing a clear and permeable network of routes into and within the town centre
The continued and adequate provision of town centre car parking is also essential to maintaining the quality of the town centre offer. Our aims are therefore:- To provide a suitable level of public parking to maintain the vitality and attraction of the town centre
- To support the economic regeneration of the town centre by releasing its surface car parks for alternative forms of development in the context of the emerging Supplementary Planning Document and Area Action Plan Development Plan Document for the town centre.
- To replace the current stock of surface car parks with high quality and secure multi-storey and/or basement car parks on the edge of the (new) pedestrian core, or as part of new development
- To encourage, as an alternative to the car, the use of sustainable modes of transport
- To provide clear planning guidance for the provision of car parking in relation to new development
