Clifftown is identified as a Major Project Area in the Central Area Masterplan Development Framework. Our strategy is to support the development of the area as a niche retail, restaurant and residential location by providing an enhanced public realm in keeping with the fine grain of its buildings, small streets, lanes, mews and yards.
Our vision is for routes generally to be pedestrian-priority shared surfaces with curtilages defining spaces for café tables and stalls.
At Southend Central Station, on Clifftown Road, we propose the creation of a new square, perhaps ‘Central Square’, to provide a strong physical link between the gateway entrance of the Station and the town centre and the High Street.
Our aim is to commission design services for a new public realm in Spring 2008.
