£100 million to enhance education
A £100 million scheme in the Farringdon area of Southend will significantly expand its well established and highly successful further and higher education offer. The plan will provide 7,500 sq metres of additional space for the University of Essex and a further 11,000 sq metres for South East Essex College.

It follows the town centre’s recognition as a focus for cultural and intellectual activities in the East of England Plan – a document that sets out the framework policies for sustainable growth in the region over the next 15-20 years.

The plan also involves the relocation of the civic library and a further £50 million scheme for the provision of 500 new apartments for students at nearby Hollybrook.

The first stage of the work will be a new £30 million building for South East Essex College to relieve pressure due to the large volume of new students at its existing site in Elmer Approach.
