    Census News
    Census Theme Tables are now on-line through NOMIS, continuing to add to the detailed results of the 2001 Census available on-line. Release of the 2001 Census based classification of Output Areas is also announced 

    Unemployment remains stable
    Unemployment in Southend has been decreasing for the last 10 years. In 1996 Unemployment stood at over 8%, in Spring 2005 the rate is just 2.8%. Please see the Unemployment Monitor publication attached to this page for more information.

    Southend ranks fifth for start-ups in England and Wales
    The latest Barclays Start-ups and Closures report sees Southend as having 122 business start-ups for every 10,000 people of the working age population. This is the highest position for any authority based in the south of England.Source: Barclays Small Business Survey First Half 2004 

    6.4 million people visit Southend
    Figures released by the East of England Tourism Board reveals that over 6 million people visited Southend in 2002. This figure is steadily growing as Southend's tourism offer increases.Source: East of England Tourism BoardCouncil report on the Economic Impact of Tourism 

    Productivity in Southend increases by 6.42%
    The Office of National Statistics has released the latest figures for Gross Value Added. These figures illustrate that value of goods and services produced in Southend-on-Sea in 2002 had increased by 6.42% on the previous year.
